Writing – Last week you organized your cards and completed your
outline so this week we are going to put it all together.
1. Get out your robot outline
and your pile of note cards for idea 1. On the back of your robot outline is an
Easy As Pie essay organizer.
2. Look at all of your notecards
and think about what your idea is. In the top section of the pie organizer,
write an opening sentence for this paragraph. It should be attention grabbing
and give an idea of what the paragraph will be about. For my frog paper, if I
was writing a paragraph about where they lived my opening sentence could be,
“High and low, hot and cold, tree frogs cover the globe.”
3. Now put your details for this
paragraph into each of the middle sections of the pie. For my frog paper: 1) Tree
frogs are found on every continent except Antarctica, but they are most common in
the tropics of the western hemisphere. 2) About 30 species live in the United
States, and over 600 can be found in South and Central America. 3) Many tree
frogs live in trees but there are also species that live in ponds, lakes, or on
the ground in moist areas.
4. Finally, it’s time for your
conclusion. What was the main point of this paragraph? What were you trying to
explain or teach? For my frog paper I could say something like, “For a tiny
little animal, tree frogs sure do cover a large part of the world!”

Writing – The last part of your paper is your conclusion.
1. The first sentence of your
conclusion retells your “thesis” or main idea of your report. Don’t use the
same exact sentence from the introduction! Write this on your robot outline
where it says Summary of Thesis. For my frog paper: Tree frogs are a very
diverse family of amphibians. (This was
the main point of my paper).
2. You need to add another
sentence that summarizes the main ideas you talked about in your paper. There
isn’t a lot of room in the outline so write this in the empty space at the
bottom of your paper. For my frog paper: They live in varied environments all
over the world, eat many different things, and all have similar but not
identical lifecycles. (This was a repeat
of the three main ideas in my paper).
3. The last sentence is your conclusion sentence. Your final
sentence should give meaning to your report. Use the word “I” and tell what you
think of the whole thing, why is it important. Write this were it says Clincher
Statement. For my frog paper: Tree frogs are so much more than just one little
brightly colored frog on the side of a tree! (This is my clincher statement that pulls everything together and gives
my opinion or tells why I thought this topic was important)
