1. In your writing notebook, describe the main character of
a story you’ve recently read for school (not
a character from a game). Answer all the questions below about them.
- What do they look like?
- What is their personality like?
- If this character were to be bullied, how would he respond?
- If this character was in a spelling bee, would she win or run away with stage fright?
2. You are going to be writing a short story. You need to
know your character so well that you would know how he would react in any
situation.
3. Read about the 6 traits of writing.

1. Here’s a quote from the Balderdash stories.
“Mrs. Carp came over with her
tomatoes. That was just a ruse. She wanted a reason to come over to complain.
No irony there.”
2. Irony means that something is the opposite of what
you would expect. Want another example of something that is ironic? A
fire station burning down is ironic. You wouldn’t expect that to happen.
3. In your writing notebook, write an example of an
ironic situation, something that’s the opposite of what you would expect.

1. Another writing trait is organization. Did the
story “hook” you? Are you interested in reading from the first paragraph?
2. Also, when you get to the end of a story you should feel
like the story is complete, that your questions have been answered, that the
story has been wrapped up.
3. Mostly endings make you feel very happy and satisfied.
When you write, you want your stories to leave your audience feeling that way.

1. Word choice is another writing trait. What about
word choice in the stories? What are some words or phrases that make the story
exciting and interesting?
2. What strong, exciting verb is used in this part of
a sentence from the story?

“a hail storm ripped through the sky like my big
brother opening a box of marshmallow cereal” (answer: ripped)
3. Why is this better than just saying it started to
hail? Does the simile make an image in your mind?
